Abstract

1483986 Polyetheresters ; polyurethanes BAYER AG 22 Oct 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 43315/75 Heading C3R [Also in Division B5] A hydroxyl group-containing polyetherester having an acid number of from 0 to 5 and a hydroxyl number of from 100 to 300 is derived from (a) a bis-hydroxyalkyl ether of a halogenated bisphenol-A of the formula in which n is 0 or 1, R 1 -R 6 are hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl and R 7 -R 10 are hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl or halogen, provided that at least one group is halogen, (b) a diol of the formula in which X 1 -X 8 are hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl, A is oxygen or sulphur and n is 1-10 and (c) a dicarboxylic acid. The polyetherester may be prepared by adding an alkylene oxide to a solution of the bisphenol in the diol thus alkoxylating the phenolic hydroxyl groups and then reacting with the dicarboxylic acid. The examples describe preparing polyetheresters from (a) bis-#-hydroxyethyl tetrabromobisphenol-A, (b) di- or tri-ethylene glycol, (c) tetrahydrophthalic acid or adipic acid, optionally with maleic anhydride and (d) optionally polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400. The acid number of the polyetherester may be reduced to zero by reaction with ethylene oxide. Polyurethanes may be prepared from the polyetheresters, Examples 7, 8 and 9 describing the preparation of foams.
