In a valve securing arrangement for suction and exhaust valves 4, 41 for air-cooled reciprocating compressors having each valve body clamped between a valve thrust cover 1 and the cylinder head 2 or an intermediate plate 6 connected to the cylinder head, the clamping surfaces 12 of the valve thrust cover and the cylinder head or the intermediate plate are plane surfaces spaced apart in the direction of the axis of the valve whereby a peripheral surface 13 of the valve body lying in said space is exposed to facilitate dissipation of heat from said valve body. The cylinder head 2 has pockets 10 to reduce flow losses, The invention is shown applied to a lateral securing arrangement of the valves on the cylinder head.
