Abstract
857,246. Railway vehicle sanding apparatus. GRESHAM & CRAVEN Ltd. Dec. 23 1958 [Sept. 23, 1957], No. 29829/57. Class 103(3). Apparatus for applying an abrasive paste on to the tyre 1, Fig. 1, of a railway vehicle wheel to improve its adhesion on the rail 3, comprises a container 5 for the paste mounted on the vehicle frame 4 and supplied with air or steam under pressure through a pipe 9; a nozzle 14 connected to the container 5 through a flexible hose 13 and a pipe 10; and a bracket 17 carrying the nozzle and pivoted to the vehicle frame at 15, the bracket also being connected to a piston operating in a cylinder 21, through a lever 18 pivoted at 19 to a rod 20 connected to the piston. The piston when inoperative is under the urge of a spring to cause the nozzle to pivot away from the wheel. When pressure is applied to the container 5 it is at the same time applied to the cylinder 21 to cause the piston to move the nozzle into the fuel line position, whereby paste is delivered on to the tyre to be carried to the rail. The paste is contained in a cardboard cylinder of which the ends are removed so that it can be inserted into the container 5 and rest on flanges 8 therein. When the pressure is cut-off the paste ceases to flow but if a less viscous material is to be used then a valve as shown in Fig. 2, is employed to cutoff the flow. The valve 33 is normally urged by a spring 34 to close a port 35 to the pipe 10. The valve is connected by a rod 32 to a piston 30 engaging a flange 37 at the bottom of a cylinder 38 also connected to the air or steam supply by a pipe 39. Clearly when pressure is applied to the container and cylinder the valve 33 is opened and the material is also forced under pressure from the container 5 through ports 40.
