Abstract

Saturated aliphatic mono-aldehydes are oxidised to saturated aliphatic mono-carboxylic acids which are substantially free from carboxylic anhydrides by treatment in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen or ozone employing as catalyst a salt of cobalt and/or manganese, the process being conducted in the presence of a compound, e.g. oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, halide or carboxylate, of lithium, sodium, rubidium, caesium, calcium, strontium or barium, at least some of which is present in ionic form, having a concentration within the range of 0,00025 to 0,25 gram atom per gram mole of total organic compound. Halogens, especially bromine, may be present, e.g. as the halides of any of the metals present. Temperatures of 0-150 DEG C. are mentioned. Elevated or subnormal pressures may be used. Batch or continuous procedures may be adopted. The Provisional Specification refers also to the presence of potassium, beryllium magnesium, zinc and cadmium compounds.
