[Also in Group XXIX] A storage container such as a silo comprises a shell acting as a containing wall for the contents or the container, the bursting pressure due to the contents of the container being mainly resisted by ties of high tensile steel, and an impermeable expansion joint between the shell and the bottom of the container to allow relative movement between the shell and the bottom without allowing egress of the contents. In Fig. 2 the shell is composed of sections a of arcuate form, the arcs being of substantially smaller radius than the shell as a whole. Each adjacent pair of sections is secured to a web projecting radially outwards from the shell and ties h in the form of wire pass round the shell in contact with the webs or with parts secured thereto. The sections may be, at least in part, segments of cones so that the shell is at least partly of conical form. As shown in Fig. 6 the sections a are attached to a foot d slidable on the bottom f of the container and are connected to the bottom of the tank by an upwardly arched plate member g. In a modification the webs are directed radially inwards and the ties attached thereto lie within the shell. As shown in Fig. 5 the foot d then slides on a foundation ring below the bottom of the container and the shell is attached to the bottom f by a downwardly arched plate g.
