Abstract

1,158,664. Liquefied gas storage reservoirs. W. HAMILTON. 29 Feb., 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 11366/67. Heading F4P. The periphery 23, Fig. 2, of a domed sheet metal roof 5, Fig. 1, of a ground reservoir for storing liquefied natural gas is supported on a concrete ring 4 resting on the ground around the reservoir mouth and is sealingly secured to said ring 4 by being bolted to a continuous cone-shaped plate 22 welded to the upper rim of a continuous impervious metal plate 19 embedded in the ring 4 which is itself sealed by a frozen sand-filled trench 41, Fig. 3, surrounding the concrete ring 4. The domed roof 5 of aluminium alloy is tensioned by steel bolts 26 embedded in the ring 4 and is freely supported on a lattice assembly of hollow rectangular sectioned aluminium beams 6 spanning the reservoir mouth and connected at spaced points at its periphery by tie-bolts 11 and threaded sleeves 14 pivoted at 15 to vertical plates 16 rigidly secured to the inner marginal edge of ring 4. The inner wall of the trench 41 is lined with a steel band 37 bolted to and surrounding the concrete ring 4 and the outer wall is lined with an aluminium band 42 which extends above ground level to contain water. The ring 4 nests on a layer of sand 2 and heat insulation material 3, and the roof lattice is lined internally by layers of heat insulation material 36 through which gas may run freely thus avoiding a gas pressure differential between the upper and lower sides of said layers.
