856,576. Anti-skid chains. EISEN-UND DRAHTWERK ERLAU A.G. June 3, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 17557/57. Class 144 (2). An anti-skid chain for a wheel tyre comprises lengths of straight links 1 to extend across the tyre tread with each link 1 disposed obliquely edge-on to the tread at an angle of 45 degrees or less, each straight limb of each link 1 having at least one wearing ring 2, 3 freely rotatable thereon to stand normal to the tread surface, the arrangement being such that only those rings (2) on those limbs which, according to the lay of the chain on the tyre, stand remote from the tyre tread operatively contact the road in use, whilst the rings (3) on the other limbs which bear on the tyre surface remain inoperative, so that for the two positions of lay of the chain, a different set of wearing rings 2 or 3 respectively operatively contact the road. As shown, a chain arrangement comprises a transverse central length with two lengths angularly disposed thereto at each end through a doubleeyed link 4 which itself carries a wearing ring 5. Pairs of rings 2, 3 may be arranged on each limb of each link, the rings of each pair being either immediately side-by-side or interleaved with those of the associated pair on the opposite limb.
