Class 143 [Also in Groups XVII and XXVIII] Apparatus for filling bags with powdered or fibrous material such as textile waste comprises inner and outer concentric casings 10, 16, the lower end of the casing 10 being open and that of the outer casing closable by a door 22. Material enters the inner casing by a pipe 56 and air is withdrawn from it at 58 through a filter 15. Supported inside the casing 16 are three bag raising and holding devices, each consisting of a hook 70 on a counterweighted cord 62. Cords and rings 70, 72 are attached to the hooks enabling them to be pulled down when the door 22 is opened, the hooks then being engaged with the rim of a bag. When the bag is released it is drawn up over the casing 10 by the counterweights. The door 22 is closed and the inner container filled. The door is opened and the weight of material causes the bag to slide off the inner casing as the material descends into it. Air under pressure may be introduced into the inner chamber to assist in discharge of the filled bag. In an alternative form of bag engaging means (not shown) the coids 62 may be attached to an openwork cylindrical frame in two hinged halves, the bag being placed in the frame with its rim turned out over the upper edge. Means (not detailed) may be provided to cut off the supply of material when a predetermined weight has been supplied and to operate a warning device'and open the door.
