In a railway wagon retarder, the braking beams lie alongside the rails and are arranged both inside and outside the rails, means such as the pneumatic rams, 22, 24, 26 acting through plates 54 and members 50, 51, 56, 57 and 58 having inclined slots therein to cause the two beams associated with each rail to turn on vertical pivots arranged at one end of each beam so that the other ends converge towards the rail, and the beams subject the wheel of a wagon to oppositely-directed thrusts of substantially equal magnitude. It is stated that this form of construction enables a wagon to be brought to rest without subjecting the wheel axles to any substantial bending moment, if any at all.
