A portable nibbling-machine comprises a die-holder 28 and a work-stripper 16 on opposite sides of the work 17, the holder or the stripper being mounted on the lower end of a guide-rod 23 which extends through the hollow punch 21. As shown, the holder 28 for die 31 is retained by a nut 29 on the end of rod 23, the upper end of which engages screw-threads in a cross-pin 24 bearing in the housing 10 and passing through a slot 25 in the punch-carrier 15. :Contact between the rod 23 and the work when the punch is raised limits feed. A screwthreaded ring 22 and a pin P secure the punch to the carrier 15, which is reciprocated in a sleeve 14 by an eccentric 11 driven by a motor 13, through gears 12. The stripper 16 engages screw-threads on sleeve 14 and is locked by a screw 18. The rod and punch 23, 21 may be inserted through a start-hole in the work before the die-holder is positioned on the rod. Alternatively, if the die-carrier is permanently fixed to the rod, the rod can be unscrewed from cross-pin 24 to permit insertion of the punch. A screw 26 locks the rod 23 in the cross-pin 24, and a passage 32 permits the escape of chips. In a modification for cutting on the up-strokes (Fig. 3, not shown), the die-holder is mounted on the sleeve 14 and the stripper on the rod 23.
