Abstract
665,788. Cutting shaped holes in plates. SANDERS, A. V., and HAWKER SANDERS, Ltd. June 30, 1950 [Aug. 11, 1949], No. 20919/49. Class 83 (iv). A hand-operated power-driven nibbling tool is characterized in that the die with which the reciprocatory punch co-operates is of hardened steel detachably mounted in the beak of the foot, the body of the foot and the beak being made of toughened steel. The tool-head comprises a housing 1 containing a shaft 2 which is reciprocated by an eccentric 7 on a spindle 4 rotated by a flexible drive-shaft. The shaft 2 moves in a bush 9 which is retained in the housing 1 by the detachable foot 11 which is clamped to the housing by a sleeve 13. A pair of diametricallyopposite dogs 14 on the foot interlock with slots in the bush 9 to prevent rotation. The foot has a shank 15 and a beak 16 and the workpiece is fed into the slot 17. A nibbling punch 19, which may be cylindrical or semi-cylindrical, fits into an axial bore in the shaft 2 and is located and retained in position by a collar 22 and a pin 23. The hardened steel die 20 screws into the beak 16 and is held in position by a setscrew. The die 20 (Fig. 3) may be in the form of a block which fits between two cheeks of the beak 16 and has a disc-like flange 26 attached to the beak by screws 27. The Provisional Specification describes also a modification in which the nibbling punch and die are replaced by an upper reciprocating and a lower fixed shearing-blade. Specification 665,777 is referred to.
