Class 72 A method of heat treating metals comprises performing the operations in vacuum sealed communicating chambers from which the ambient atmosphere is excluded. As shown, the material 22 being treated is heated in a vacuum, electrically heated furnace 1 which is in communication through a channel 3, having a valve 11, with a quenching chamber 2 provided with a side chamber 4 containing the quenching medium. By tilting the apparatus about a pivot 6 the change in the furnace may be transferred to the quenching chamber. The side chamber 4 is provided with heating and cooling elements 19 so that the medium, e.g. lead; may be kept at the required temperature. A grid 24 may be provided to retain the charge in the quenching chamber, the charge be removed through a plugged hole 17. The apparatus may be charged with an inert gas under normal or reduced pressure.
