Abstract

The affinity of linear polyester, particularly polyethylene terephthalate, fibres or films for basic or disperse dyestuffs is increased by treatment with a solution, in an inert solvent, of an addition product of an ether or tertiary amine with sulphur trioxide and/or with a halide of a sulphur oxy-acid such as chlor- or fluor-sulphonic acid, sulphuryl chloride, pyro-sulphuryl chloride or thionyl chloride. Specified ethers and tertiary amines for use in forming the addition products are b , b -dichloro-diethyl ether, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, thioxane, trimethyl- or triethyl-amine, N : N-dimethylaniline and pyridine. Specified solvents are chloroform, trichlorethane, tetrachlorethane, methylene chloride and ethylene chloride. Treatment may be effected at elevated temperatures, e.g. at the boil. The treated materials may be further treated with a solution of hydrazine in water or in an aliphatic alcohol, or with an N-formyl compound containing a reactive hydrogen atom on the nitrogen such as formamide, ethyl-, cyclohexyl- or benzyl-formamide, di-(N-formyl-)-ethylene-diamine or -hexamethylene diamine, suitably diluted with water or diluted with aliphatic alcohols, ketones, ethers, esters, aliphatic hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon halides. The further treatment is preferably effected at an elevated temperature, e.g. at the boil, and when N-formyl compounds are employed a swelling agent such as phenyl- or cresylglycol, dioxane or benzyl benzoate may be included in the treating liquor. Examples are given.ALSO:The affinity of linear polyester, particularly polyethylene terephthalate, fibres or films for basic or disperse dyestuffs is increased by treatment with a solution, in an inert solvent, of an addition product of an ether or tertiary amine with sulphur trioxide and/or with a halide of a sulphur oxy-acid such as chlor- or fluor-sulphonic acid, sulphuryl chloride, pyro-sulphuryl chloride or thionyl chloride.
