Abstract
A crystallizable linear high polymer of propylene is dissolved in a solvent and passed as a stream through a liquid at from 20-40 DEG C. with which the solvent is miscible, but in which the polymer is insoluble, until the solvent has been removed from the stream, which becomes a solid stream of polymer and is removed from the liquid. The polymer solution may be extruded through a slit into the liquid, to form a film or tape, or through a spinneret to form filaments. While in the liquid, the polymer stream may be stretched. Preferably the polymer has an intrinsic viscosity (measured in tetrahydronaphthalene at 135 DEG C.) of from 0.5-7, and the polymer concentration in the solution may be from 15-80% by weight. The solution, which may contain from 0.05-1.0% by weight of a heat-stabilizer for the polymer, may be at a temperature of from 100-180 DEG C. when passed into the liquid, which may consist of at least one aliphatic alcohol having 1-4 carbon atoms and/or at least one aliphatic ketone. Specified polypropylene solvents are petroleum fractions, petroleum jelly, paraffin, toluene, xylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene, mixtures of diphenyl and diphenyl ether; halogenated hydrocarbons such as tetrachloroethane, chlorobenzene, orthodichlorobenzene, alpha-chloronaphthalene, and ethylene dibromide; ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone, cyclopentanone, and cyclohexanone; cetyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, butyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, butylene glycol, nitrobenzene, benzonitrile and thiophene. Preferably, an aliphatic hydrocarbon or kerosene fraction boiling at from 170-250 DEG C. is used. Specified heat-stabilizers include dibutyltin dilaurate, dibutyltin di-p-toluenesulphonamide, diphenylethylphosphite, and a mixture of diphenylamine and phenyl salicylate.
