Abstract

A process for degreasing articles of metal, porcelain, plastic or glass or other non-absorbent articles comprises treating the contaminated articles, preferably at elevated temperature, with an agitated two-phase mixture consisting of (a) a chlorinated hydrocarbon, suitably trichlorethylene perchlorethylene, methylene chloride or methyl chloroform, containing (b) 0,001-1%, preferably 0,-0,5% by weight of (a) of a cationic surface-active agent, e.g. cetylpyridinium bromide, long chain-dialkyldimethyl ammonium chloride, long chain-alkyldimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or the condensate of methyloctadecylamine with 4.6 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide, and (c) not more than 5%, preferably 1-2%, by weight of (a) of water which produces a substantially nonemulsified system. The articles are generally cleansed by immersion in the boiling two-phase mixture, after which they are rinsed either by a dip in a separate rinsing bath of the chlorinated hydrocarbon, or by being held in the vapour zone above the cleaning bath.
