Abstract

In the manufacture of lacquers, suitable for electrically insulating wires, and comprising a solution in an organic solvent of a polyester containing free hydroxyl groups and a masked polyisocyanate, the polyester used is one of (1) a benzene tricarboxylic acid, (2) a glycol and, if desired, (3) a dicarboxylic acid and/or (4) a tri- or higher polyhydric alcohol in an amount of not more than 20 mol per cent based on the total alcohol component. In making the polyester, the glycol may be ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propane-1:2-diol, 2, 2-dimethylpropane-1, 3-diol, 4, 41-dihydroxy dicyclohexyl dimethyl methane, bis-hydroxyethylated-4,4dihydroxy diphenyl dimethyl methane, a butanediol or a hexanediol; the other dicarboxylic acid may be phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic or adipic acid; and either of the acid components may be used in the form of the free acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof. The polyisocyanate may be as disclosed in Specification 840,318. The organic solvent may be a cresol, a xylenol, a polyalkyl benzene (e.g. a xylene) a benzine fraction, a ketone (e.g. acetone or cyclohexanone) or an ester (e.g. ethyl acetate or butyl acetate). The lacquer may also contain a pigment, a soluble dyestuff or a flow agent (e.g. a polyamide). In an example a lacquer comprises a solution in cresol and xylene of a polyester derived from terephthalic-acid-bis-glycol ester, benzene-1 2, 4tricarboxylic acid and ethylene glycol, and a masked polyisocyanate derived from toluene diisocyanate, phenol and a small quantity of a tertiary amine.
