Abstract

A heat-hardenable resin comprises the reaction product of (a) from 25-55 equivalent per cent of one of, or a mixture of two or more of the following: terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and ester-forming derivatives thereof, (b) 20-70 equivalent per cent of one or more saturated aliphatic polyhydric alcohols, which form a polyester with (a), and (c) 5-25 equivalent per cent of an ethoxyline resin in a reactive condition. Specified polyhydric alcohols are ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, glycerol, pentaerythritol and trimethylol propane. The reaction may be effected in the presence of cadmium, cuprous, ferric, lead, nickel or magnesium acetate. Specified curing agent for the resins are zinc octoate, zinc naphthenate, melamine resins and polyisocyanates. In the Examples (1) dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, glycerol and an epoxy resin are condensed in the presence of lead acetate, (2) the product of Example 1 is mixed with a polyisocyanate, (3) dimethylterephthalate, glycerol and an epoxy resin are condensed in the presence of lead acetate, the product being mixed with a melamine resin as a curing agent, and, (4) the resin of Example 3 is mixed with a polyisocyanate and applied in solution in xylene to form a coating on wires, said coating then being cured. A mixture of xylene and cresol is specified as the solvent in Example 1.
