855,443. Reverse gearing; gearing for stopping and starting machinery; shaft couplings. WEAVER, W. A. May 19, 1958 [May 25, 1957], No. 16658/57. Class 80 (2). Reverse gearing comprises an input shaft 10, Fig. 1, rotatably supporting a sprocket 23 connected by a chain 18 a sprocket 26 fast with a driven shaft 11, and also carrying axially slidably on splines 19 a clutch-gear 28, slidden leftwards to mesh with a gear 27 also fast with the driven shaft 11 for reverse or rightwards so that clutch teeth 30 thereon engage clutch teeth 31 on the sprocket 23 for forward drive. Establishment of the forward or reverse ratio is effected by a shift lever 37 pivoted at 38 and acting through a selector rod 32 carrying a striker fork 29. The shift lever 37 is retained in one of the ratio established or neutral positions by a spring-biased detent 60. The detent 60 is released, prior to movement of the shift lever 37, by operation of a lever 54, which acts through links 56, 57 upon a collar 59 to disengage a main clutch connecting a prime mover to the input gear shaft 10. The clutch-gear 28 may alternatively be slidden to its ratio established positions by electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic means (not further described). A manually operated remote control device for the gearing and the main clutch comprises a shift lever 64, Fig. 3; carrying a handle 72 which is turned initially to act through links 71, 70, 67 and move a bell crank lever 54a which releases the detent 60a. Turning the bell crank lever 54a acts through links 56a, 57a upon the disengaging collar 59a of the main clutch, so that up-and-down movement of the lever 64 can be effected to act through a link 63 upon the shift lever 37a, which slides the selector rod 32a &c. to establish forward or reverse. The driven shaft 11 carries upon axial splines 45 a shaft coupling sleeve 44 secured in position by an end screw 43 locked by a set screw 49. Bolts 51 connect a driven shaft 53 to the coupling sleeve 44. The gearing is mounted in a casing 14 having an oil filler plug 16 and a drain plug 15.
