855,229. Circulating systems for controlling the temperature of liquids in bulk. VARNEY & CO. Ltd., J. March 12, 1957 [March 13, 1956], No. 7759/56. Classes 64(2) and 64(3) A method of controlling the temperature of a phototgraphic processing solution e.g. developer, comprises circulating a liquid from a heat exchanger 1 having means for heating and cooling said liquid, to a container or containers 6, 9 for the solution and back to the heat exchanger, and controlling the temperature of the circulating liquid by a thermostat. In the form shown a liquid such as mains water is circulated by a pump 14 through a filter 13 and through jackets 8, 11 surrounding the containers 6, 9. The thermostat 2 actuated by changes in temperature of the circulating liquid in the tank 1 switches on an electric heater 3 in the tank or actuates a valve (not shown) to admit cold mains water to the tank through a conduit 5 as required surplus hot water then being discharged from the tank through a conduit 4. In a further form (Fig. 3, not shown), the processing solution is itself circulated through the heat exchanger which contains either an electric heater and a cooling coil or a coil through which heating or cooling fluid is circulated. In an apparatus comprising a plurality of containers for the solution, these may be interconnected either in series (as shown) or in parallel for the flow of the circulating liquid.
