Abstract
A milk cooling tank comprises a container 1, an insulating jacket 4-6, and an evaporator coil 36 in the space 30 between the jacket and container and spaced from the latter. The container and part of the jacket flare upwardly uniformly about their vertical axes and may be of hemispherical, conical, elliptical or parabolic form or a combination of such forms. Liquid is supplied to the space 30 by a distributer pipe 35 and is withdrawn through a pipe 33 for recirculation by a pump 32. The ice-bank formed on the evaporator is prevented from touching the container 1 by a thermostat 40 which stops the refrigerating machine when a predetermined ice-thickness is attained. Container 1 is provided with an hinged lid 11, an agitator 13 arranged to promote a rising circulation of milk over the interior surface of the container, a thermostat 15 and an outlet pipe 27 having a plug 25. Thermostat 15 normally controls the operation of pump 32 and agitator 13 but may also energize the refrigerating machine when the milk temperature exceeds a predetermined value subject to over-riding control by thermostat 40.
