Abstract

855,186. Grinding cutlery. WESTALL RICHARDSON Ltd. April 29, 1959 [May 14, 1958], No. 15394/58. Class 60. A machine for grinding flutes in a blade blank involving the processes described in Specification 855,185 comprises a motor-driven grinding wheel 10 the peripheral face of which is adapted to receive a rib formation 10A, Fig. 5, corresponding to the shape of the flutes, a reciprocable carrier 14 adapted to support a blade 15 in an oblique or tangential position transverse to the wheel face, guides 32A, 32B for the ends of a stack of blades located to the rear of the blade 24 presented to the wheel, and a pusher plate 33 movable on the carrier 14, as the latter is retracted from the wheel, to move the bottom blank from the stack and to cause it, on the return of the carrier to replace the ground blade 24. Compressed air or other fluid is admitted by a valve 45, Fig. 7, to a cylinder 8 to move the carrier 14 towards the wheel, against the tension of a spring 22 attached to the upper arm 16 of a vertical lever pivoted at 17, Fig. 1, grinding being effected until the arm 16 contacts a stop 19. Fluid is simultaneously supplied to a cylinder 49 causing a piston rod 53 to move slowly outwards until it operates a reversing valve 54 to direct the fluid pressure to the opposite ends of the cylinders 18 and 49, the grinding period being thus controlled by the rate at which the piston rod 53 is extended. The carrier 14 is then retracted by the spring 22 until the lower arm 20 of the pivoted lever contacts a stop 21, the piston rod 38 of the cylinder 18 continuing its rearward movement until a stop 41, Fig. 5, on an upper plate 35 meets a stop 40 when the pusher plate 33 has been withdrawn from beneath the stack to allow the bottom blank to reach the carrier surface in front of it. As the lower arm 20 meets the stop 21, a bracket 60 operates a second reversing valve 55 to restore the connections to the main valve 45 so that the cycle is repeated. The 'initial outward movement of the piston rod 38 moves the upper plate 35 until the stop 40 contacts its attachment lugs 36, the pusher plate 33 advancing through the stack to move the blank into a slot previously occupied by the ground blade 24 which is thus pushed into a shoot 61 and delivered to a receptacle 62, Fig. 2. In accordance with the process referred to above, the shaped blanks have serrated edges which are used to form the ribbed edge of the wheel 10 at a low grinding speed by connecting a low-speed motor 65. Fig. 2, directly to an extension 66 of the wheel shaft ; after the wheel has been formed it is belt-driven at normal grinding speed by another motor 13.
