[Also in Division B4] In a machine for edge working a shoe sole the sole blank 30 is held stationary in the machine and a milling cutter 22 is moved around the sole blank. The milling cutter 22 is carried on an arm 24 which is mounted on a pivot 20 on a ring 8, the cutter being urged against the sole blank by a spring 26. The ring 8 is rotatably mounted in a slide 4 and is rotated by a motor 14 through gears 16, 18, 12. The ring 8 also carries an eccentric disc 10 which engages a roller 40 on a lever 44 which is pivoted to the slide 4 at 42 and to the machine frame at 48, the rotation of the disc 10 causing the slide 4 to be reciprocated. The combination of the linear motion of the slide 4 and the rotary motion of the ring 8 causes the pivot 20 to move around the sole in an approximately elliptical orbit 32 (Fig. 2) the milling cutter being urged into engagement with the sole blank by the spring 26. The length of the orbit can be adjusted in accordance with the length of the sole by moving the position of the pivot 42 or the pivot 48. In a particular embodiment (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) sole blanks 30 are stacked in a magazine (54) where they are moved by a thrust bar (82) to a working station where they are held between a hold down foot (94) and a thrust plate (96). The milling cutter 22 then moves around the sole blank as described above and the completed sole is ejected as another sole blank is fed to the machine by a parallelogram link (105) on a rod (84) connected to the thrust rod (82).
