Abstract

854,675. Regulating. HIGH, C. F. May 28, 1958, No. 16993/58. Class 7(6). [Also in Group XXVIII] A fuel injection pump comprises a rotating and reciprocating piston 106, Fig. 1, having fuel inlet ports 120 and a fuel outlet port 118 which communicate with ports 132 and 138 respectively as the piston rotates. The quantity of fuel delivered is controlled by the angular position of a metering valve 124 having an axial groove 130 leading from the pumping chamber to radial ports 128 which communicate with ports 122 on the piston member during a variable portion of the delivery strokes, the ports 122 leading to a by-pass chamber via a non-return valve. The metering valve 124 is attached to a plate 74 to which is connected a cam follower rod 66 which extends through a slot in a supporting plate 64 and is spring loaded to contact a cam plate 48, Fig. 3, which slides in a slot 54 of a cam guide 46. The cam plate 48 is moved by a lever 34 pivoted at 36 and actuated by a control arm 32 connected to a diaphragm 26, Fig. 1, movable in accordance with the vacuum in the inlet manifold such that as the cam plate moves to the left the cam follower rod 66 contacts the face 48b of the cam plate causing the metering valve 124 to rotate to reduce the quantity of fuel, injected and when the rod 66 engages the face 48c no fuel is injected. The cam guide 46 is fulcrumed at 56 by a manually adjustable pin 58 and is moved angularly about this fulcrum, causing a corresponding adjustment of the metering valve, in accordance with changes in atmospheric pressure and the temperature in the housing containing this control mechanism. For this purpose the cam guide 46 is provided with a socket 60 engaged by one end of a bell crank lever 80, Fig. 5, the other arm 84 of this lever is attached to an aneroid bellows 76, the arm 84 having a winding which tends to unwind with increase in temperature and wind with decrease in temperature. The fuel inlet chamber 134, Fig. 1, is connected to the metering valve chamber 75 through a bleed 79 which allows vapour to flow to this chamber and hence to the atmosphere. A resilient sleeve 176 is secured to the rod 66 and the casing to present flow of fuel to that part of the casing containing the control mechanism.
