Abstract

A metal is provided with a wear-resisting surface having a low coefficient of friction by treatment at 400 DEG -700 DEG C. in a fused salt bath containing selenium and/or tellurium or compounds thereof, an alkali metal chloride and/or carbonate, a cyanide and a cyanate. The bath may also contain an alkaline earth metal carbonate oxide, hydroxide and/or chloride. The examples disclose the treatment of (1) workpieces of steel containing Ni 20% and Cr 18% in a bath consisting of selenium, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium cyanate and potassium cyanate, (2) cast iron workpieces in a bath consisting of sodium selenite, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, oxide and hydroxide, sodium cyanide and potassium cyanate, (3) workpieces of steel containing C 0.4% and Cr 1% in a bath consisting of sodium selenite, sodium chloride, carbonate and hydroxide, sodium cyanide and potassium cyanate, and (4) mild steel workpieces in a bath consisting of sodium tellurate, sodium chloride, sodium cyanide, calcium cyanate and barium chloride.
