854,000. Reverse gearing. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. March 24, 1959 [April 23, 1958], No. 12908/58. Class 80 (2). Reverse gearing for ships comprises a turbine 1 driving a shaft 4 carrying a gear 2 meshing a similar gear 3 on a parallel shaft 4, forward and reverse positive clutches 13, 12 of the type described in Specification 831,999 being selectively engaged to drive one or other of two gears 7, 6 meshing a common gear 8 fast on a shaft driving through a gear train 9, 10 to a propeller shaft 11, the clutches being controlled by a forward-reverse lever 15 which when moved from a ratio established position first acts through linkwork 17 to apply a brake 14 slowing down the shaft 11, simultaneously linkwork 19 acting to close the speed control device 18 of the turbine which also slows down, a motion detecting device 16 on the propeller shaft preventing disengagement of the established forward-reverse clutch until such time as the propeller shaft has come to rest, when the lever 15 can complete its movement to establish the newly selected direction of motion. To facilitate disengagement of the established clutch, the linkwork 19 operated by the forward-reverse selector lever 15 may apply a brake 20 on the input gear shaft 4, and this brake may turn the input shaft slightly backwards. On completion of a ratio establishing movement of the lever 15, the speed control device 18 of the turbine 1 is restored to its open position.
