Abstract

Cellular bodies having closed cells are produced from gas-containing thermoplastic compositions by heating the composition under pressure to gelling temperature in moulds, cooling the composition while maintaining the pressure, releasing the pressure, removing the bodies and fully expanding them. In one example 50 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride, 50 parts by weight of dioctyl phthalate and 20 parts by weight of methyl ethyl ketone are placed in a mould and nitrogen under pressure introduced. Pressure is then applied to the mould by a plunger and the composition is heated, gelled, and expanded. Other suitable thermoplastic compounds are stated to be polystyrene and its copolymers, and cellulose acetate. Blowing agents in the composition such as azoaminobenzene or azoisobutyric acid dinitrile may be used in place of the nitrogen. The gelled composition may be partially expanded in the mould before cooling. Specifications 694,964 and 745,248 are referred to.
