Abstract

1279763 Cellular p.v.c. plastigels LONZA Ltd 9 April 1970 [14 April 1969] 16870/70 Heading B5A A polymeric plastigel composition containing at least 50% vinyl chloride and a blowing agent in the form of a raw slab is degassed by exposure to vacuum and heated in a mould at 3-500 atmospheres to the dissociation temperature of the blowing agent and gelation temperature of the composition, the gelled composition is then pro-expanded and cooled before expansion to its final form by re-heating outside the mould. The mould preferably has substantially the same dimensions as the raw slab, and pressure is preferably applied by a piston. The plastigel may contain a vinyl chloride homo- or copolymer e.g. 90% vinyl chloride and 10% vinyl acetate. The raw slab may be initially partially gelled by heating to not more than 10‹ C. below the dissociation temperature of the blowing agent.
