Abstract

Polystyrene grains containing a volatile non-solvent liquid blowing agent are shaped e.g. by extrusion or injection moulding under pressure, sufficient to agglomerate the grains and leave no substantial amount of cords between them, and at a temperature too low for blowing, and the shaped products are aged at a temperature too low for blowing at least until they become opaque. Heating the articles, if desired in stages then produces foamed polystyrene. The volatile blowing liquid is preferably a hydrocarbon boiling between 10 DEG and 70 DEG C. Desirably it is mixed with a liquid which is relatively soluble in polystyrene, e.g. methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, or benzene. The minimum ageing period at only about 12 hours at -10 DEG C., and is of the order of 5 days at room temperature. The polystyrene grains may contain 3-15% of blowing agent, e.g. petroleum ether and the agent may contain 0.3-0.5 methylene chloride. Preferably the grains are washed with water before introduction with the shaping machine and retain about 1-5% of their weight of water. A temperature of 85 DEG C. may be used at the entry into the machine increasing to 105-115 DEG C. in the nozzle. The shaped strip is cooled immediately on leaving the machine. The material does not blow in the press because the blowing agent dissolves in the polystyrene. It then separates during ageing rendering the composition opaque, and blowing can then take place at a temperature as low as 85 DEG to 95 DEG C. Specification 924,924 is referred to.
