Abstract

<PICT:0853802/IV(a)/1> Thermoplastic synthetic resins, e.g. polyethylene, polystyrene toughened with natural or styrene-butadiene rubber, nylon or polyvinyl chloride, are refined from an incompatible gel fraction by passing in a softened state through a circular sharp-edged orifice. The faces of the orifice Fig. 2 (6), are inclined to each other at an angle of less than 90 degrees, preferably 60-65 degrees, and the diameter is preferably less than 0,04. The orifice may be incorporated in the barrel of the extruder (2), being screwed in the inner end of a sleeve (4) before the final passage (3), and is preferably positioned a short distance before the final extrusion point. The process may also be used to improve the dispersion of pigments, fillers or modifying agents in the resin.
