Abstract

A flame-retardant coating composition comprises an aqueous emulsion of a film-forming organic binder which is a synthetic addition polymer, a sodium borate, a liquid or solid halogenated organic compound in an amount from 20% to 80% of the non-volatile constituents and aluminium powder of the leafing type, with or without one or more other inorganic pigments and/or extenders. The binder may be polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, polystyrene, polyacrylates, butadienestyrene copolymer and, especially, polyvinyl acetate. The halogenated organic compound may be chlorinated paraffin oil or wax, chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated natural rubber, chlorinated phthalic acid esters, chlorinated organic phosphates or 2,3-dibromopropyl phosphate. When the halogenated compound is solid it is preferably dissolved in an organic solvent e.g. toluene prior to addition to the emulsion. The composition may also comprise a methyl cellulose thickener, sodium hexametaphosphate, an alkyl sulphonate emulsifying agent, a non-ionic polyoxyethylene ester dispersing agent, tricresyl phosphate plasticizer. The composition may be used to coat fibre insulation board, hardboard, wood or plywood.ALSO:A flame retardant coating composition is used to coat fibre insulation board, hardboard, plywood and wood and comprises an aqueous emulsion of a film-forming organic binder which is a synthetic addition polymer, especially polyvinyl acetate, a sodium borate, a liquid or solid halogenated organic compound, and aluminium powder of the leafing type with or without other pigments and/or extenders. The organic binder may also be polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, polystyrene, polyacrylates or butadiene-styrene copolymer. The halogenated organic compound may be chlorinated paraffin oil or wax, chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated natural rubber, chlorinated phthalic acid esters, chlorinated organic phosphates or 2,3-dibromopropyl phosphate.
