Relates to a labelling machine for applying labels to rectangular packages, the labels extending over one side and the two end faces of the package. Packages 26, Fig. 1 are fed from a feed channel 27 to the successive pockets 11 of an intermittently rotating pocket wheel 10 by a reciprocating pusher 28 and are ejected by a similar pusher 31 at a diametrically opposite station. A middle gum bar wheel 16 formed with middle gum bars 17 is driven synchronously with the pocket wheel 10 by a pair of chains 23 engaging sprockets 13 and 19, Fig. 2 secured to the shafts of the wheels 10 and 16. The chains 23 carry end gum bars 24 at spaced intervals corresponding to the circumferential pitch of the middle gum bars 17 and the pockets 11. The pairs of end gum bars 24 are spaced laterally by a distance slightly greater than the length of the middle gum bars 17 so that the latter pass into the spaces between the bars 24 to form, in effect, a single gum bar corresponding in length with labels 59 contained in a magazine 44, the end gum bars 24 moving into register with the middle gum bars 17 or the pockets 11 at each intermittent movement of the apparatus. The bars 17, 24 lie in the same plane as they pass in contact with a gumming roller 51 and also as they rest in position opposite a reciprocating label magazine 44 where they extract a label 59. As the wheel 16 rotates, the gum bar 17 moves out of the plane of the gum bars 24, thus leaving the gummed label 59 bridging the gap between the end bars 24 which subsequently dwell in register with a pocket 11 at the delivery station. A package 26 is ejected and passes between the gum bars 24 to engage the label 59 and carry it into a folding channel 61 consisting of a pair of spaced brushes 62, Fig. 3 (not shown), serving to fold over the end portions of the label 59 on to the end faces of the package.
