Abstract

1425009 Packaging cigarettes; labelling machine GD SpA 23 Feb 1973 [29 Nov 1971] 55390/71 Headings B8C and B8F A cigarette packaging machine transfers batches G of cigarettes from pockets 1 of intermittently moving endless conveyer 2 to a series of stages A-E in which each batch is wrapped in lined foil 6, and then in a label 22, the cigarettes moving transversely to their axes at each stage. At stage A each batch is gripped by jaws 4, 4a of a wheel which rotates through 180 degrees to a position where transfer members 8, 8a push the batch through a blank 6, which thereby takes a U-shape, into a pocket at B<SP>1</SP> of the intermittently rotating wheel at stage B. The blank is wrapped and folded about the batch by means of oscillating fingers 10, 10a, folder 13, fingers 15, 15a, fingers 16, 16a and 17, 17a, and by engagement with projections of edge 14. At station B<SP>V</SP>, the wrapped batch is transferred to a rotary folding stage C, similar to stage B, where a label 22 is wrapped round the foil wrapping. At station C<SP>V</SP>, the packet is transferred by members 27, 27a to a pocket of a rotating wheel at stage D where the label flaps are glued and pressed together by buffer block 32. The packet is finally moved to stage E by pusher-lifter 33, and a pusher 34 and fork 35 apply a glued endseal label to the packet which then proceeds along plate 36 for ejection by wheel 41. The pusher pushes the packet through the prongs of the fork 35 which has seated astride it, and held by vacuum, a revenue stamp or sealing label. When the suction holding the stamp or label ceases the packet passes through the fork prongs. A section 36a of the plate 36 is heated to dry the glue which is used to join the two flaps of the label turned down in stage C.
