Abstract

Propylene is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reacting a halide or oxyhalide of a metal of Group IV(a), V(a) or VI(a) of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table with an organometallic compound, and an inert hydrocarbon solvent, at a temperature above the critical temperature for propylene, e.g. 100 to 250 DEG C., and under a minimum pressure of propylene which is directly proportional to the temperature, the pressure when the temperature is 100 DEG C. being at least 1,000 pounds per square inch, and when the temperature is 250 DEG C. the pressure being at least 11,000 pounds per square inch. The organometallic compound may be an aluminium trialkyl, a lithium aluminium tetraalkyl, or a Grignard reagent. Exemplified compounds are aluminium tributyl and triisobutyl, and lithium aluminium tetraheptyl. The preferred halides are titanium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride and mixtures thereof, and a mixture of titanium tetrachloride with vanadium oxytrichloride. Suitable hydrocarbon solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, n-heptane and decahydronaphthalene. The polypropylene is stated to be highly crystalline and can be fabricated into fibres, tubes, films, and used as coatings for wires. It can also be blended with other thermoplastic resins such as polyethylene, and admixed with fillers such as finely divided carbon and silica. Specification 777,538 is referred to.
