Abstract

A catalyst for use in the polymerization of conjugated diolefines is obtained by contacting an organometallic compound with a solid halide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal having a valency lower than the maximum, or with an oxyhalide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal. Specified catalyst components are zinc and aluminium alkyls, e.g. the ethyls, titanium and vanadium trichlorides, vanadium oxychloride and chromyl chloride. In examples, media used in the preparation of catalyst are heptane and benzene.ALSO:Conjugated diolefins are polymerized in an organic medium containing an insoluble catalyst obtained by contacting a solid halide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal having a valency lower than the maximum, or an oxyhalide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal, with an organometallic compound such as an alkyl of zinc or aluminium, e.g. zinc or aluminium ethyl. Diolefins specified are butadiene, isoprene and pentadiene and the IVa, Va and VIa metal compounds used are titanium and vanadium trichlorides, vanadium oxychloride and chromyl chloride. In examples, heptane and benzene are used as media and catalyst is destroyed with methanol, ether/HCl and/or methanol/HCl. The addition of monomer during polymerization is also described. The products may be plasticized, vulcanized and may contain antioxidants and reinforcing agents, and ingredients used are high boiling aromatic hydrocarbons, sulphur, zinc oxide, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, mercaptobenzothiazole disulphide and carbon black. The polymers obtained are linear and have substantially only 1,4 enchainment. Separation of the trans-1,4 polymer (crystalline) from the amorphous material may be effected with solvents such as ether, acetone, heptane, benzene and methylene chloride. The products find application as sheets and as filaments which may be drawn and annealed.
