852,907. Sugar extraction apparatus. NATIONAL CYLINDER GAS CO. Feb. 4, 1957 [March 1, 1956], No. 3735/57. Class 127 [Also in Group XXX] In extraction apparatus, in which fibrous solids are conveyed upwardly in counter current through a liquid, e.g. chopped sugar cane or sugar beet cossettes are conveyed through water, and which includes a cylindrical envelope 103, at least one interrupted spiral arrangement 303- 306 of flights 302 disposed about a central shaft 301 rotating in the envelope 103, and at least one deflector member 401 extending from the envelope into each of the interruptions of the flights, the number of spiral arrangements of flights is equal to the number of flights per flight level, the flights of adjoining flight levels do not overlap, the deflector members are pitched at angles less than 90 degrees relative to a plane normal to the axis of the central shaft, and the deflector members extending into adjacent flight interruptions are longitudinally and circumferentially displaced one from another. Pairs of oppositely disposed deflector members may extend from the envelope into each of the flight interruptions. The flight pitch may be up to 30 degrees, a pitch of 0À5-6 degrees being suitable for highly fibrous material such as sugar cane. The deflector pitch may be up to 60 degrees, and is preferably 45 degrees.
