Abstract
852,536. Preventing corrosion. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. July 24, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 23608/57. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXXVI] Corrosion of pipes and electric cable sheaths of aluminium, lead or aluminium or lead base alloy when buried in corrosive soil is prevented by providing around and adjacent the pipe or cable a layer of material containing from 0À1 to 5% of barium chromate. The carrier material may consist of sand or sandy soil and/or powdered hydrated aluminium silicate in the form of kaolin, china clay, bentonite or fuller's earth with or without powdered calcium carbonate, the mixture being used as a trench backfill. Alternatively the barium chromate is carried in a greasy or asphaltic compound such as mineral or animal oil or wax or bitumen or pitch, with or without calcium carbonate and/or hydrated aluminium silicate and applied directly to the cable sheath or pipe, used as an impregnant for a wrapping of fibrous material or enclosed in a layer of an impermeable material such as rubber. In all its forms the layer containing barium chromate may also contain up to 5% of a corrosion inhibitor such as a metal chromate other than barium chromate, a nitrate, a phosphate or an amine, a ketone, an aldehyde or a natural gum or resin. Specification 852,535 is referred to.
