Abstract

852,535. Preventing corrosion. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. June 18, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 23607/57. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXXVI] Corrosion of pipes and electric cable sheaths of aluminium, lead or aluminium or lead base alloy when buried in corrosive soils is prevented by providing around and adjacent the pipe or cable a layer of backfill material consisting partly or completely of powdered hydrated aluminium silicate in the form, for example, of kaolin, china clay, bentonite or fuller's earth. At least 5 % preferably at least 10% by weight of the silicate may be mixed with sand or sandy soil with or without the addition of from 10 to 30% by weight of powdered calcium carbonate and used as a bed for the pipe or cable and as a trench backfill, the layer around the pipe or cable being at least one inch and preferably two inches thick. The layer consisting of or containing the silicate may also contain up to 5% of a corrosion inhibitor such as a metal chromate, nitrate, or phosphate or an amine, ketone, aldehyde or natural gum or resin. Specification 852,536 is referred to.
