Abstract
852,424. Refining iron. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION A.G. Nov. 13, 1957 [Dec. 24, 1956], No. 35406/57. Class 72 Liquid iron containing over 3% carbon is desulphurized by exposure to a vacuum of less than 10 mm. mercury. As shown, it may be drawn into vacuum vessel 1 which can be charged and discharged by raising and lowering ladle 12 by means of a hydraulic cylinder 14 thus agitating the metal while it is under the vacuum which may be less than 10 mm. Hg. The sulphur compounds may be recovered by freezing device 10<SP>1</SP> in the pipe 10 of pumping system 9. To improve volatilization of sulphur compounds the pig iron may be washed through with gas before or during vacuum treatment and a CO reaction may be obtained by the addition of oxygen. Iron treated in this way is said to form spheroidal graphite without the addition of a nodularizing agent. Specification 847,854 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 801,518.
