852,204. Thermal regenerators. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER A. B. April 10, 1957 [April 12, 1956], No. 11740/57. Class 64(1) [Also in Group XXXIV] In a thermal regenerator comprising a rotor within a stationary housing having end plates located opposite the ends of the rotor and apertured to permit the passage of the heat exchanging fluids through the rotor, sealing plates confronting imperforate portions of the rotor end plates and urged towards the rotor, are maintained each individually and independently of other sealing plates, at a predetermined distance from the rotor end faces by contact with rolling elements associated with the rotor and producing rolling friction. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the sealing plates 2, 3 at opposite ends of the rotor 1, are hinged near the rotor axis and at their outer ends are provided with rollers 4, 7 which roll upon suitable annular surfaces on the rotor and are maintained in contact with these surfaces either by their own weight or by additional weights, e.g. 6, 9 or by springs. In the apparatus shown the weight of the upper plate 2 assists the effect of weight 6 which is therefore smaller than the weight 9. In modifications described the rollers may ride within an anular channel secured to the rotor shell or an annular strip extending from the rotor shell may be embraced by two rollers. Fig. 2 shows an alternative form of roller comprising balls retained in a cage 11, the ball races being hardened steel wires 12 located in recesses formed in iron rings 13, 14 one of which is secured to the rotor flange and hence rotates with the rotor and the other of which is secured to the sealing plate.
