Class 20(2) A pit prop base or mine roof has a wall engaging surface comprising a number of rubber pads. In Figure 4 a detachable metal carrier fitted to the base of a pit prop is divided into square recesses of truncated pyramidal shape into which are cemented or vulcanised textile reinforced rubber pads 15 fitted with metal sliding plates on their bearing surfaces. Alternatively, pads with plates on both their upper and lower surfaces are bolted to an unrecessed base. The pads at the edge of the base are less resilient than those in the centre. In Figure 6c, I- section roof bars 24 have a strip 28 carrying rubber pads which is fastened to a flange by spring clips 29.
