Abstract

851,902. Preventing incrustation. HUGHES & CO. Ltd., F. A. Dec. 12, 1958 [March 4, 1958], No. 6898/58. Class 123(1) The fouling of structures, especially ships' hulls, immersed in sea-water by marine growths is prevented by discharging against the underwater surface a growth deterrent consisting of an oily liquid such as kerosene or light diesel oil in which has been dissolved from 0À01 to 0À2% by weight of a tri-alkyl or tri-aryl tin compound. Specific examples of suitable compounds are triphenyl tin oxide or acetate and tributyl tin oxide or acetate. The deterrent is preferably suspended in a carrier gas, for example air or the exhaust gas from an I.C. engine, which is discharged through perforated pipes located beneath the hull &c., so that the gas bubbles rising over the submerged surface coat it with the deterrent.
