Abstract

An active substance stated to comprise both the "Uterine Relaxing" (UR-) factor and Relaxin is obtained from ovaries (especially of pigs) or placental tissue by extraction with 0,01 to 1,0 N (preferably 0,05 to 0,5 N) aqueous acid containing 0 to 80% of an organic, water-miscible solvent and precipitating the active substance from the extract by the addition of from 4 to 10 volumes of a water-miscible organic solvent which may be the same as used in the extracting mixture or different. The process may be carried out as a batch process or as a continuous process in which commesuited material may be intimately mixed with barium sulphate in the ratio of 5:1 and the mixture extracted in a series of columns, that having been extracted the longest being replaced periodically. Specified organic solvents are acetone, methanol, ethanol, dioxain, tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile. Specified acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric acetic and phosphoric acids. The preferred solvent is acetone containing from 20 to 90% by volume of 0,05 to 0,4 N aqueous hydrochloric acid. If the content of organic solvent is zero the aqueous acid is preferably 0,05 to 0,5 N. Characteristics of the I/R absorption spectrum of the active substance are given.
