Abstract

851,606. Velocity-modulated tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Nov. 23, 1956 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 35977/56. Class 39(1). H.F. discharge apparatus, e.g. a Klystron tube, has a resonant cavity 7, Fig. 3, in which there is established an alternating electromagnetic field and having two tubular re-entrant portions 9, forming a drift tube 11, forming between their opposed ends a gap for interaction between a beam of charged particles, passed through the drift tube, and the field, wherein the opposed ends of the re-entrant portions are bevelled externally and the faces of the bevels are provided with grooves extending lengthwise of the re-entrant portions whereby the multifactor effect is eliminated or substantially reduced. The bevelling and grooving are sufficient to divide the opposed ends of the re-entrant portions 9 into a plurality of fingers. The drift tube 11 is circular and has a wallthickness exceeding half the radius of the tube. The reduction of the multipactor effect is explained with reference to Fig. 2, and it is stated that the effect is reduced when the width d of the ridges 5 is small compared with their spacing S, when the height h of the ridges 5 is great compared with the spacing w, and when d is small compared with w.
