Abstract

A porous surface of an article such as a wooden article is coated by heating the surface within an interval of time not exceeding 120 seconds to a temperature considerably higher than room temperature, e.g. 150 DEG to 390 DEG F., and subsequently applying thereto while hot a finish in a liquid state and of a temperature sufficiently low to cause a sudden reduction in the temperature of the surface of at least 50 DEG F. but not to below room temperature. The hardening or drying of the coating may be accelerated by a blast of cold air. Suitable coating compositions include solutions of cellulose esters and ethers, linseed oil lacquers, mixtures of unsaturated alkyd resins and polystyrene phenol-formaldehyde resins, urea resins, dehydrated castor oil, silicones, and mixtures thereof. More than one coat may be applied, and further heating may be used to cure the coatings.
