851,515. Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gear. SURI, M. M. Aug. 21, 1958, No. 26901/58. Class 80 (2). Variable-speed gearing for vehicles comprises an input shaft K which first transmits drive at a reduced ratio through gears, &c. 1, 2, L, M, 3, 5 to an output shaft N when a hydrodynamic torque converter 18 is filled, emptying the torque converter and filling a fluid coupling 15 partially synchronizing a mechanical clutch 13, 14 engaged for direct drive between the input and output shafts. As shown, the clutch 13, 14 is a positive clutch, but alternatively it may be a plate clutch.
