851,507. Jet propulsion plant. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. March 20, 1958 [March 20, 1957], No. 8945/58. Class 110(3). An air intake for a jet-propulsion engine comprises an intake sleeve defining a forwardlyfacing intake and lateral ports for the intake of additional air downstream thereof, the profile of the intake sleeve between its leading edge and the lateral ports being variable by means of inflatable bodies which extend the profile radially outwards and further inflatable bodies provided at the lateral ports which when inflated obscure the ports and when deflated open the lateral ports. The intake sleeve comprises a fairing 1 bounding a duct 2 open to the atmosphere through a forwardly-facing orifice 3 and providing lateral openings or ports 6 arranged behind the orifice 3. Deformable envelopes 7 and 8 are fixed along the margins of the ports 6, each of which contains several inflatable cells 9. When inflated, the cells 9 cause the envelopes 7, 8 to block the ports 6. The end portion 10 of the external surface of the fairing 1 is itself deformable and likewise contains inflatable bodies 11. The envelope 10 comprises a rearward extension 10B containing an inflatable body 12 which when inflated forms a rear face 10A which deflects the air into the ports 6 when the engine is mounted in an aircraft descending vertically. The cells may be inflated from bottles of compressed air or from the compressor of the engine and may be operated automatically by the pilot's action on a control, by an automatic device in response to the speed of flight, or in response to pressure losses of a predetermined magnitude at the intake or to the attitude of the aircraft.
