A method of finishing component parts (e.g. by deburring) comprises the attachment of the workpieces 15 to a substantially horizontal shaft 9 and rotating them with the shaft so that the workpieces or the portions to be treated are repeatedly carried into, through, and out of a processing medium 7 carried in a stationary vessel 6. The medium may be of stone or other mineral chips in sizes ranging from grains to pebbles and may include abrasive or polishing substances, soaps, detergent, or lubricating materials and a liquid to fill the interstices between the solid elements. The workpieces 15 are mounted on brackets 14 which extend radially from a drum 13 mounted for rotation with the shaft 9 which is motordriven through reduction gearing and may be periodically reversed. The workpieces may be so attached to the radial arms or brackets that they may be indexed about axes perpendicular to that of the shaft so that different surfaces of the work may be prevented in the direction of movement ; this changing of position of the workpieces may be effected automatically through appropriate gearing operated by rotation of the shaft 9. A section of the shaft may be made removable or may be omitted to permit the treatment of disc-like workpieces which, mounted on suitable fixtures, are inserted concentrically on or between the stub axle or axles.
