Abstract

851,348. Radio position finding systems. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. March 6, 1953 [March 13, 1952], No. 6609/52. Class 40(7). In a pulse or C.W. hyperbolic radar system, a display system comprises a set of indicator lamps at the receiver, which light to indicate the position of a target, and which are positioned on a screen to lie along hyperbolic lattice lines at points of intersection or are arranged in a rectangle with uniform separation. The display is fed from three spaced receiving stations through channels containing delay lines and coincidence gates such that the lamp appropriate to the target range is lit. As shown, the receiving stations A,C and B,C are connected by radio links. Signals from target X to A pass through delay line D1, those through C pass along delay line D3 and those through B pass along line D2. Coincidence of the signals through D3, D1 causes operation of one of gates G1, G2 &c. and coincidence of signals through D3, D2 effects operation of one of gates G100, G101 &c., and the appropriate indicator lamp 1 is lit. In a second embodiment, not shown, the system is adapted for use as an interrogating system and the delay lines are adjustable for reception from targets of a known range. The indicator in this case responds in accordance with the particular frequency of transmission of the replying aircraft. Continuous wave or pulsed transmissions may be employed.
