Abstract
721,197. Radio navigation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 10, 1952 [Jan. 23, 1951], No. 1763/51. Class 40 (7). In a radar system, a target position is given by the intersection of position lines, e.g. hyperbola and ellipse, drawn on a previously prepared chart, the appropriate position lines. of a given type being indicated by the deflection of a C.R. tube. As shown, the C.R. tubes 4, 9 at the receiver B are respectively provided with scale markings which correspond with elliptical and hyperbolic position lines, and in C.R. tube 4, the vertical deflection plates are supplied with the reflected signal from the target C through a channel having a circuit 6 with a delay equal to the time To of direct transmission from the transmitter A to receiver B. The horizontal plates are supplied with the direct transmitter and receiver signal. The C.R. tube deflection, which is proportional to the total time of travel of the reflected signal, i.e. T1+T2, indicates the particular ellipse, previously prepared on the chart, on which the target position must lie. The C.R. tube 9 is associated with a second receiver D and the deflection indicates the particular hyperbola, having focii B, D, on which the target position lies. In a second embodiment, not shown, the second receiver D, is located at A and a third set of circular position lines, with centre A, are employed. In a third embodiment, not shown, two circular position lines are employed and it is stated that pulse F.M., or C.W. systems may be used; in the C.W. case an existing broadcast transmitter can be used. The targets adapted for the system may be either passive or co-operating.
