Abstract

851,266. Storing liquefied gases. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd., [formerly CONSTOCK INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd.]. March 23, 1959, No. 9971/59. Class 8(2). A heat insulating layer 12, Fig. 1, occupying the space between an outer relatively strong wall 10 of a liquefied gas container operating at substantially atmospheric pressure and a relatively weak inner shell (not shown) is formed with pores 14 of such permeability that in the event of rupture of the inner shell and direct contact between the liquefied gas and the insulation layer 12 prevents the escape of vapour at a rate greater than the rate of entrance of vapour thus generating a back pressure, preventing further penetration of the liquid 16. In a modification the insulation comprises sloping baffle plates 32, Fig. 2, between the outer wall 30 and the inner shell (not shown) ; the back pressure being generated in pockets 34 in the event of rupture of the inner shell.
